Severe blizzard crippled part of Sichuan-Tibet highway
The police and road patrol were helping the stranded vehicle.
The severe blizzard slammed part of Sichuan-Tibet Highway with a recorded snowfall on Feb, 21, 2016. And the worst hit area was Kangding, a city of Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in western Sichuan province of Southwest China. The extreme weather led to an unprecedented snowfall (measuring 38.3mm) overnight, from Feb, 21 to Feb, 22. It was believed to be the largest snowfall ever recorded over the past 10 years in Kangding.
In addition, the heavy snow crippled part of G318 National Highway in Zheduo Mountain, making driving extremely dangerous on icy road. To prevent serious accident, the traffic police department of Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture responded to the natural disaster promptly. All traffic policemen were deployed at key mountains and the road patrol was also strengthened to weed out possible danger and disperse the traffic jam.
The latest news came in the morning of Feb, 25, 2016, that the blocked Zheduo Mountain was reopened to the public. However, driving on icy road seemed arduous and still needed special caution. The traffic police department suggested drivers mounting snow chain on four wheels and preparing enough water and food before hitting the road. Of course, having enough preparation to keep warm was of utmost importance. And never forget to check the latest traffic report from local traffic police station.
According to latest report of Garzemeteoro logical observatory, the snowfall mixed with precipitation was expected to continue till the end of Feb, 25. The following areas were likely to have mild or middle snowfall, in Baiyu County, Ganzi County, Luhuo County, Daofu, County, Danba County, Luding County, Batang County while Xinlong county,Kangding City, Yajiang County,Litang County would expect heavy snow.
