In the winter time, the temperature in Lhasa is about 15 degrees Celsius during the day; yet at night the temperature falls to about 5 degree Celsius, there is a big difference in temperature. It is necessary to wear winter down coats, keep warm to avoid being frost-bitten.

The Nyingchi – Bomi route is suitable to winter-time travel with relatively low altitudes and abundant oxygen. Traveling through this route allows us to appreciate the Tibetan winter landscape at around altitudes of 2,000 meters to 3,000 meters. Tibet tourist routes do not service group tourism daily in the winter time, therefore it is highly recommended that tourists should make reservations beforehand to guarantee going on a journey on time from Lhasa.

In the winter time, the oxygen content in Tibet is even lower which easily causes altitude sickness; for this reason tourists should prepare medicine before going on the trip.

It is even sunnier in Tibet in the winter time, therefor sun glasses are very helpful for both sun-shading as well as for decreasing incidences of snow blindness. If snow blindness occurs, please clean your eyes with water and go to shady places or blindfold your eyes with eye-patches and iced towels. Please bring sun creams, body lotions as well as lip balm with you.

A warning has been issued by the tourism office for photographic enthusiasts, sunshine along the Tibetan plateau is very strong in the winter time, therefore there is a big contrast between the sensitive surfaces of the photographic fields and the shaded surfaces.

When taking images against the sun you can add supplemental lighting using special flashes. The best time plots for photo-taking on the plateau are before 9 o’clock in the morning and after 5 o’clock in the afternoon.
