Just at the moments it's the high season for tourism in Tibet,  and the Drepung monastery which is located in the western area of Lhasa has the stream of  believers coming to pray and it is unending. The temple practices the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, and at one time was the largest Tibetan Buddhism temple, and together with the Ganden monastery and the Sera monastery comprise what is called the three large temples.

Recently amongst the worshippers and tourists coming to the temple has been added yet another “tour guide”, and if you go into the temple without choosing it, then it will be as though you did not even visit!” A man by the name of Sangzhu proudly promotes it with such words.

In reality, this smart guide is something that three recently graduated students put together and it is their first product. It is a tour guide application that can easily position visitors. Furthermore, it can automatically introduce points of interests as visitors move around the museum. It has both a Chinese and an Tibetan interface.

According Sangzhu, although such devices may be more prominent in the eastern regions of China, they still have not become popularized in Tibet and few people are accustomed to using them. For this reason, he cooperated with his classmates Luojia and Danzeng and seized this big opportunity to make something useful.

 “It is a nice experience wearing the electronic tour guide while moving through the quiet temple, a lot of people who come to worship also wear it. Although many worshippers may often come, the do not have a full understanding of the temple’s history as well as culture.” Said Sangzhu.

To ensure that explanations were done properly, the three young men looked into authoritative resources and received lessons from seasoned tour guides as well as high monks. Finally, they compiled bilingual explanations in English as well as Tibetan and recorded the materials in Mandarin as well as the Lhasa dialect.

 “Currently our tour guide application is very responsive and many other monasteries wish to cooperate with us. We are currently also making Amdo dialect as well as Khampa dialect Tibetan language version for the Drepung monastery.” Sangzhu said “In order to expand our services we are currently applying for a small-scale loan.”
