As Tibet’s peak tourism season arrives, doctors warn tourists of the large fluctuations in temperature during the rainy season and advise taking preventative measures against cold-induced severe altitude sickness.

Tibetan doctors remind tourists that they should bring ample clothing when visiting Tibet in the rainy season in order to keep warm. Although the temperature on the plateau is warm at midday, there are large fluctuations in temperature and tourists not familiar with the climate can easily catch a cold. Cold and fever increases the body’s oxygen consumption, thus increasing the severity of altitude sickness, which can also lead to high altitude pulmonary edema, and in extreme cases even a cerebral edema.

Tourists travelling to Tibet for the first time can take medicine in advance to alleviate altitude sickness, including American ginseng, Rhodiola and others. If you’re not carrying an oxygen bottle, don’t hastily enter altitudes of 5,000 meters and above. At the same time, get rid of any psychological burdens and don’t be too nervous.
