The PC, cell phone and WAP versions of the “China Lhasa Tibetan Opera” website have officially launched, making the Tibetan Opera more accessible to the general public, people.cn reported.

The Tibetan Opera, also referred to as “Ajilamu”, is a Tibetan religious art originated from the 8th century. In the 17th century, Tibetan Opera was separated from monasteries’ religious rituals, gradually forming into a routine performaning art combines singing and other basic skills such as chanting, reading aloud, dancing and narration. In September of 2009, Tibetan Opera was listed as a World Intangible Heritage.

According to the Burea of Culture of Lhasa, in order to protect and inherit the Tibetan Opera, Lhasa’s Bureau of Culture has started constructing the “Lhasa Tibetan Opera Website” since 2014. The “Tibetan Opera Website” which is helpful for the studies of Tibetan Opera and the popularization of the knowledge regarding Tibetan Opera has finally come into being.

So far, this website is mainly composed of nine panels such as Tibetan Opera information, genres, research, inheritance, audio and video, costume and stage property, Tibetan Opera encyclopedia, policies and regulations.

Since the establishment of the Tibetan Opera Troupe in1960, Tibetan Opera has gradually been professionalized and standardized. This has not only restored the Tibetan Opera performing activities at the Shoton Festival, but also carried forward its eight major plays, thus a big number of Tibetan Opera performances, new plays and talents were made public.

Now Lhasa's Bureau of Culture is working on the project of “setting up a big stage of Tibetan Opera”, planning to give performances on one day of each weekend by presenting both digitized and traditional live shows for the inheritance of this cultural heritage.
