It’s currently peak tourist season in Tibet and the self-driving route along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway is heating up. In the interest of safety, experts advise self-driving tourists to adhere to road safety rules when entering Tibet.
The Sichuan-Tibet Highway is more than 2,400 meters long with an average elevation of more than 3,000 meters. Along the way you can admire numerous tourist attractions, including Namjagbarwa, Ra’og Lake and the Lulang Township, amongst others. As a result, the highway is dubbed as "the Chinese landscape avenue".
Due to the freedom and flexibility that comes with self-driving travel, in particular choice of travel route and viewing spots, more and more people are choosing to drive to Tibet to enjoy the sightseeing. Most of the tourists traveling from the inland tend to choose routes with lower altitude, such as the National Highway 318.
However, the frequent natural disasters, coupled with recent increased rainfall and various geological disasters, such as landslides and mudslides, have brought about safety risks to tourists passing through the Sichuan-Tibet Highway.
The Second Detachment of Armed Police, who has been responsible for guarding the highway for a long time, reminds tourists that they should pay attention to three common road safety rules while enjoying the beautiful scenery. Firstly, the vehicle should be in good condition and novices are not allowed to drive. Secondly, tourists should pay attention to weather information when approaching the dangerous section of the highway, in order to avoid the rain and driving at night. Finally, tourists should avoid traveling to Tibet alone and should preferably be accompanied by an experienced team leader who is responsible for directing the group.
