China's Chaka Salt Lake opens
After six months of closed upgrades and renovations, Qinghai's Chaka Salt Lake opened to the public once again on April 26. Nearly 15,000 people visited the brine lake and salt sculptures, enjoying China's "mirror of the sky".
Chaka is a Tibetan word meaning "pool of salt" or "blue salt sea". It is located in Chaka Township in Ulan County, Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. According to historical records, Chaka Lake was one of the earliest salt lakes to develop in China. The salt lake has been renowned since the time of the Western Han Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago.
Chaka Salt Lake is around 100 square kilometers in area. The average thickness of the salt deposit is 4 meters, and the lake is 13 meters in depth at its deepest point. There are about 450 million tons of reserves in the lake. Because it is a both solid and liquid brine lake, when the weather is sunny, the lake becomes a kind of mirror comparable to Bolivia's sky mirror lake. Thus it is known as China's "mirror of the sky".
Renovation to and construction around Chaka Salt Lake, which has completed its third phase of construction, has fully upgraded the wheeled train loop line within the scenic area, parking lots, and toilet facilities. At the same time, construction of convenience stores, professional guide services, and performing art services and a smart travel system were also created so that visitors need only to use their mobile phones to enjoy a visit to Chaka Lake.
