As the largest tributary of the middle reach of the Yarlung Zangbo River flows within Shigatse Prefecture, Nyang Qu River is originated from the Noijinkangsang Glacier in southern and central Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) and trudging as far as 217 kilometers with a total drainage area of 11,130 square kilometers.

Shigatse has long been known as the "the  breadbasket of Tibet" and the "time-honored productive farming belt", because it is at the right location between the Nyang Qu River and the Yarlung Zangbo River.
