The Tibet Autonomous Region Fukang Women's and Children's Hospital released on the 27th that it has given birth to the first test-tube baby on the 24th of September at 3 p.m..

That is a big breakthrough in human assisted reproductive technologies in high altitude environments, and has fulfilled a gap in the realm of medicine inside of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

On July 25th, 1978, the world's first test-tube baby was born in England at the Oldham General Hospital; on March 10th, 1988, China's first test-tube baby was born at the Peking University Third Hospital.

The baby born is a boy, Han and with a weight of 2.69 kilograms.  At present both the mother and the infant are in good condition, according to the Fukang Women's and Children's Hospital.

Under the effects of high altitude, low oxygen levels in low air pressure, test tube baby technology has always been a challenge on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, said Wu Dong, expert at the Chengdu Jinjiang Women and Children Health Hospital which provided technology support to the Fukang Women's and Children's Hospital.

Wang Bin, founder of the Fukang Women's and Children's Hospital said, 3 years ago the General Hospital of Tibet Military Region conducted the human assisted reproductive technology related investigation. “The adaptations of medical equipment for high altitudes end condition inspections in advance established a theoretical and practical basis to succeed today.

The Fukang Women's and Children's Hospital Reproductive Medicine Center was established in December of 2011. It is the first human assisted reproductive medical center in Tibet. In 2015, the hospital passed inspection by the state experts group and at the same time it earned four types of assisted reproduction technology and only four months later succeeded with its first pregnancy.  On September 24th, 2016 it conducted its first test tube birth.

"Many mothers in Tibet would like to give birth to babies through test-tube technology, but they are hindered by economic and language difference as well as psychological stress amongst other things.” Wang Bin said that following the successful test-tube baby operation that situation will be resolved.
