Winters in Tibet may not have the hustle and bustle of summer, nor the endless stream of tourists, yet, the black-necked cranes in the riverside meadows will enchant you with their elegant dancing. The Tibet Tourism Administration has created a special tour just for bird-lovers this season: "Winter in Tibet: A Dance With Cranes."

The black-necked crane is a crane special to the plateau region, as well as an endangered species in the world. It is named for the dark red color on the exposed part of its forehead, and the black feathers on its neck and upper abdomen. Every October, starting in the middle of the month, black-necked cranes travel from thousands miles away to the three rivers of Tibet (Yarlung Tsangpo River, Lhasa River, and Nyangchu River) for wintering.

According to Tashi Dhondup, deputy director of the Lhasa Tourism Bureau, thanks to local environmental protection efforts, the black-necked cranes are growing in number. They can frequently be seen in valleys and fields, and are an amazing sight in the plateau's winter.

In the meadows, or by the houses, the black-necked cranes often graze by groups of three or more; the way they dance could make anyone marvel in wonder. For tourists, a winter bird-watching tour in Tibet is definitely a feast for the eyes and the mind.

Recommendations from the tourism agency: Because the barhead goose and the black-necked cranes are protected species in China, while one is inside the wildlife conservation area, it is best to keep a certain distance from the birds. Avoid scaring, interfering, or feeding the birds, and listen to the tour guides. Sunlight on the plateau is particularly strong, with a sharp difference in morning and evening temperatures, so make sure to bring enough sunscreen and warm clothing. It is best to pack binoculars and photo equipment.
