The blueprint for Terminal 3 at Lhasa Gonggar International Airport has been unveiled. Inspiration for the design came from traditional Tibetan culture, where people longed for an "eternal Shagri-la."

The design analyzed characteristics of Tibet to create Gonggar Airport Terminal 3 as a modern airport terminal in its overall design, functional workflow, building architecture, environmental science, and energy conservation and environmental protection, etc.

The design is elegant, functional, and perfectly matches the building style with its locale.

The annual passenger throughput of Lhasa Gonggar Airport exceeded three million people for first time on November 2016.  To meet the rapidly expanding air transportation needs for Tibet, earlier this year, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Administration of China in Tibet Autonomous Region launched a feasibility study and preliminary design for reconstruction and extension project of Lhasa Gonggar Airport.

The project is designed to meet the transport volume needs of 9 million passengers and 80 thousand tons of air freight projected for 2025, which includes the new Terminal 3 (with 88 thousand square meters of usable area), airside station site, air traffic management facility,  warehouse for air freight, fire safety resources, landside transportation, power source facilities, and assistance building, etc.

The Lhasa Gonggar Airport is on the southern bank of Yarlung Tsangpo River, one of the airports with highest altitude in the world. The airport first became operational on March 1st, 1965.
