Tibet has 17 main categories of grass, seven sub-categories and 104 types.

The grassland covers a total area of 1.323 billion mu ( one mu equals to about 667 square meters), of which 1.15 billion mu is usable grassland; annual production of fresh grass is 77.9 million tons and annual livestock carrying capacity stands at 32.13 million standard sheep unit (on average, 36 mu of usable grassland can raise one sheep unit).

This is the result of the second grassland survey conducted recently by the Agricultural and Pastoral Office of Tibet Autonomous Region.

At the same time, this survey also gave an insight into degradation of Tibetan grasslands and changing trends.

Tibet’s degraded grasslands take up an area of 353 million mu, which is 26.7 percent of the total grassland area. 222 million mu experienced slight degradation, accounting for 16.8 percent of the total area; 102 million mu moderate degradation, 7.7 percent of the total area; and 29 million mu heavy degradation, 2.2 percent of the total area.

Tibet Autonomous Region has the largest area of natural grassland in China, with abundant grassland resources and various types of grass. The survey will play an important role in Tibet's construction of ecological civilization and ecological security screen.

To date, grassland survey results have already been used in drawing up plans, implementing grassland protection policies and other grassland protection and construction work.
