Qinghai: Environment protection of Sanjiangyuan gets remarkable results
Environment protection of Sanjiangyuan natural reserve(Sanjiangyuan) in Qinghai province has achieved remarkable results, according to the Qinghai Sangjiangyuan office.
Qinghai has taken a series of programs to protect Sanjiangyuan, such as returning grazing to grassland, comprehensive management of black soil land, water and soil conservation, wetland protection, infrastructure construction of ecological animal husbandry, science and technology training and so on, from State Council's approval in 2005 to implement the Sangjiangyuan ecological protection and the construction of the first phrase project to the comprehensive implementation of the second phrase project.
There is increase in water resources. Water resources have increased nearly eight billion cubic meters during the last decade.
There is also increased vegetation cover. Compared with 2004, all kind of the grassland coverage in Sanjiangyuan have increased by 11.6% on average, with overall grass production increasing by 30%.
Biodiversity is enhanced. Numbers of Tibetan antelope, also known as the “ecological spirit”, have been restored from less than 20,000 in the 80’s to more than 70,000 now. Farmers and herdsmen have increased income.
Currently, the per capita income of farmers and herdsmen in the Sanjiangyuan area has reached 6,565 yuan, which is an average annual increase of 12.4% over the last 10 years. There is great development potential. The working and living conditions of majority of farmers and herdsmen have made improved remarkably. Nearly 100,000 farmers and herdsmen switched from grazing to entrepreneurship.
