Rapid increase in car consumption in Tibet
Since the establishment of TAR, automobile consumption in Tibet has started from zero and gradually developed. In recent years, it has seen a rapid increase, reflecting the improved living standards of Tibetan people and changes in Tibet’s economy and society. Data shows that, up until April 2014, the number of motor vehicles in Tibet amounted to more than 325,000, with 247,000 drivers, an increase of 322% and 166% respectively over 10 years. Along with rapid economic and social development in Tibet and the continuous improvement to living standards, more and more people are starting to buy private cars, and cars are now seen in most ordinary families.
