Another area of Lhasa‘s Old Town will be repaired recently following the Bakhor Street, China Tibet News reported.

The Shidelin Temple inside Lhasa’s Old Town neighborhood has a history of almost 1,000 years. After Tibet’s peaceful liberation, the Shidelin Temple was damaged due to various reasons, leaving it dilapidated from the two-story to less than one- floor structure. Since the 1980s, some residents have moved to the area around the temple. With Lhasa’s continued development, it is getting more and more urgent to protect this historical site and its surrounding area.

“The revonated Shidelin Temple will serve as the Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall of Lhasa’s Chengguan District,” said Chodron, deputy director of Tibet Cultural Relics Bureau. “This will help boost Lhasa’s cultural image, improve the lives of nearby residents, and grow tourism.”

Since 2012, Tibet has invested 1.5 billion yuan (228 million U.S. dollars) in renovating old towns, including repairing ritual walk paths, replacing worn-out electrical circuits, providing fire control equipments, installing digital TVs and Internet, and adding tourist  facilities.

In all renovations, Lhasa has strictly followed the guidelines of “maintaining the local customs and the original styles”, which has given the Bakhor Street in Old Town a facelift without losing its authentic charm.
