China’s first historical play on Guge culture "Dreaming of Guge" was put on show on Jan. 4 in Lhasa, Xinhua News reported.

In the middle of the 9th century, the Tubo King Langdarma's suppression of Buddhism created turmoil in the imperial court, causing Buddhist descendants of the royal family to flee to Ngari in west Tibet. Among these descendants was Dezu Gun, who established the Guge Kingdom around the 10th century. However, the flourishing Guge Kingdom was suddenly annihilated 300 years ago. Today, the ruins of the Guge Kingdom still stand in Zanda, Ngari.

Jiang Yu, director of "Dreaming of Guge" said that the play was divided into the four acts including "the Sacred Mountain", "the fall of Shangshung", "Rise and Fall of Guge", and "Dreaming of Guge", which were performed in Tibetan dance, folk songs and other art forms. The cast and crew are mainly comprised of local farmers and folk artists from Ngari.

Shangshung, dating back to 18,000 years ago, was an ancient culture and kingdom in western and northwestern Tibet.

Li Xingguo, chief of the Ngari Cultural Bureau, said that the play will also be performed this month in Hebei and Shaanxi in order to show appreciation to these two provinces for their aid to Ngari over the years.
