The first Egyptian who has successfully climbed onto the summit of Mt. Qomolangma, the highest peak on earth, was honored by the Egyptian National Council for Sports, the official MENA news agency reported on Sunday.

Omar Samra, who climbed onto the top of Mt. Qomolongma on May 17, said at the celebration that it was his willpower and strong intention and the love of his homeland that made him realized this accomplishment.

According to a report of local newspaper Al-Ahram Weekly on its website, Samra, 28, is an MBA student at London School of Economics.

Samra, accompanied by three Englishmen and one from South Africa, set out to conquer the highest mountain on earth in late March.

The Egyptian climber made his first mountain climbing in Switzerland at the age of 16, which was also the first time he saw snow since he was born and had grown up in Cairo, where it never snows.

The celebration held Sunday here was attended by Hassan Saqr, head of the National Council for Sports, and Nepal's Ambassador to Egypt Rambhakta PB Thakur, MENA said.
