China's Qinghai provincial government has taken steps to drop coal prices and raise the heating subsidy for local residents in quake-hit Yushu, answering Premier Wen Jiabao's call to help quake survivors get through the cold winter.

During a live broadcast by China National Radio on Sunday, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao chatted with Cerinchungcuo, a Tibetan teacher from Yushu, about the problems quake survivors were facing.

Cerinchungcuo expressed her worries about the soaring price of coal. After the live broadcast, Wen instructed Qinghai provincial government to make sure Yushu residents have adequate heating.

Qinghai provincial government has since decided to raise the heating subsidy for 80,000 people living in tents from 5 yuan per person per day to 7 yuan (1.06 U.S.Dollar).

Further, the provincial government vowed to curb coal prices by reducing transportation costs.

Additionally, Qinghai provincial government also decided to offer price subsidies to 51,000 poor people in Yushu for three months to offset current price hikes. The rate of subsidy is 10 yuan per person per day.

Yushu was jolted by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on April 14. About 2,200 people died in the quake.
