Hidden intent of Cameron's meeting with Dalai Lama
On May 14, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg met with the Dalai Lama in London despite repeated Chinese representations.
China voiced strong indignation and stern objection to British Prime Minister David Cameron's meeting with the Dalai Lama, and lodged representation to the UK.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the meeting had grossly interfered in China's internal affairs, hurt the feelings of Chinese people and sent false signals to the "Tibet independence" forces.
Not only officials but also ordinary Chinese netizens oppose such a meeting. Chinese people don't allow any meeting with the Dalai Lama, private or official, as it is a kind of endorsement for the anti-China secessionists and a blatant interference in China's domestic affairs, which will inevitably lead to strained bilateral relations.
As far as I am concerned, the Britain utilized the mask of “private” to cover their true intention of the meeting; and the Dalai Lama, who has been used to appreciating the political meetings, only meant to work in collaboration with the liar; What's more, he is a liar himself.
The 14th Dalai Lama, who has for decades been engaged with activities aimed at separating Tibet from China, is never a “simple monk”. As a political figure, he should never be hosted by leaders of any country.
For Cameron, a prime minister as he is, not only represents himself, but also the UK as a country. So how could that meeting be only a “private” one?
The country that Cameron represents does want to build a positive relationship with China, a promising export market and an increasingly credible partner in international affairs. But he also fell victim to the incorrect assumption that giving audience to the Dalai Lama could prove his moral clarity and help score easy political points at home.
It is already not a secret that the local people are not satisfied with the government due to the economic crisis. The British government expected to use the Dalai Lama as a tool to make a diversion.
On the other hand, the meeting is, in fact resulted from the growing power of China: The money that the Dalai Lama gets is what the Western countries gain from their investment in China; the Cameron's meeting with the Dalai Lama is just to tell the world that he is bold enough to irrigate China and Britain is powerful as well.
But Cameron has to bear in mind that China will not sit still while its core interests are trespassed on. By that time the people of his own country would feel more unsatisfied with him.
Therefore, the British side should seriously consider China's solemn stance, stop indulging and supporting anti-China "Tibet independence" forces, and take immediate and effective measures to minimize the baneful impact, so as to maintain the overall development of bilateral ties. That is what a responsible government should do.
