Who on earth can represent Tibetans?
The Dalai Lama and his followers have been preaching that they are representatives of the "6 million Tibetans" over the past 6 decades. Therefore, some people outside China hold the opinion that overseas Tibetans are the spokesmen of Tibet and Tibetans.
Then who can really represent Tibetans? And which representative deserves this title?
We can analyze the meaning of a "representative" with a simple logic.
First of all, a "representative" should live and work in a constituency where he or she is to represent, which is a general practice and legal ground of the constitution and election law in every state. Therefore, being in Tibet should be a basic precondition if the person were a representative of Tibetans. Some self-claimed "Tibetan representatives” outside China (some even proclaim to be the spokesmen of Tibetans) had either memories of old Tibet before 1959 or before the Culture Revolution (1966-1976) when talking about Tibet. They would shun away from the great changes taken place in Tibet after the reform and opening-up. If they took an exam on the basic knowledge of Tibetan or four Tibetan areas of China, chances are they would end up with pretty low scores. So it would be with those who always say they need to protect the Tibetan culture. They may fail if they were to be tested on Tibetan language.
Second, a "representative” needs to have a good grasp of the situation of his or her region, city, county, village and its people, which is another general practice in international community. Those self-claimed "Tibetan representatives" know neither about the basic needs of local Tibetans nor what the Chinese government and enterprises have done for Tibet's development and Tibetan people's livelihood. There is a book titled Virtual Tibet, which might be more suitable for those who are alienated from the reality of Tibet.
Third, to be a local representative, one needs to be able to make profits for local people. By local, we mean "the overwhelming majority"of the locals. I went through the words and deeds that those self-claimed representatives of Tibet had made outside China, including that of the 14th Dalai Lama. They can be summarized into four categories by their actions: cursing China, defending for the Old Tibet, obstructing Tibet's interaction with the international community as a part of China, and creating incidents or stirring up outrages in Tibet and four Tibetan areas of China. However, what have they done for the benefits of Tibetans? The answer is, nothing, but disturbing the normal social life of Tibetan locals, making troubles against the normal religious order, obstructing economic construction in Tibetan-inhabited areas and spoiling Tibetan's happy life.
Fourth, the one who represents a region should be selected in a democratic way. Therefore, elected by the local people is a key factor for being a reprentative of the whole area. The 14th Dalai Lama and his followers are representatives of feudal serfdom in Old Tibet, or ignorant and incompetent guys who pretend to be scholars. If a vote were held in Tibetan-inhabited areas, the result could be imagined.
Hence, the 14th Dalai Lama and his followers are not qualified for representing the Tibetan people. But they deceived themselves and others by saying that they represent people in Tibet. Isn't it self-deception?
The reality of the international politics is cruel. More and more illustrations can prove that the logic of western countries such as the US isn't what their dependents can depend on because they prefer to sacrifice a county and its people to meet their own values. They had supported the power of Saddam Hussein, Mubarak, Gaddafi and Taliban. What about now?
I believe that those who survive by betraying the interests of their nation will always be branded as traitors and will be betrayed by their backers in turn sooner or later, as they have no principles, nor do they love their motherland and their nation. The Der Spiegel, a German weekly magazine published an interview saying the 14th Dalai Lama betrayed his motherland. So who can truly represent the Tibetan people and who is the troublemaker of the so-called "Tibet issue"? I am sure that readers can judge and draw a conclusion for themselves through their ownt thinking and observations.
