Obama's well-plotted scheme loses out for lack of "RMB"
The US President Barack Obama met with the Dalai Lama, a political exile despite the strong protest, repeated negotiations and solemn representation of the Chinese side Saturday for a second time after his coming into power. It grossly violated the norms governing international relations, severely hurt the Chinese people's feeling and damaged the China-US relations.
Although the meeting was a private one as stated by the White House, it has caused a great international effect. Taking a quick glance at it, many people may think the US has made a complete success in this battle. However, to have a second thought, we found that Obama's meeting with the Dalai Lama was simply a helpless move of Obama confronted with series of political pressure both domestic and from abroad on the debt-ceiling problem. Obama was at a loss and had no choice but to take the meeting to distract the world's as well as his republican opponents' attention. At the same time, he wanted to show his tough political stance to increase his chances for the approaching election in 2012.
However, things went out against Obama's expectation. His well-plotted deal lost out for lack of "RMB", namely, reason, maturity and benefit.
First, Obama has no reason to meet with the Dalai Lama, a political exile in nature, who has long engaged in secessionist activities in the pretext of religion freedom. The White House said the meeting focused on the cultural, religious and human rights issues in Tibet. However, the two laureates of the Nobel Peace Price have both made a mistake and misunderstood the meaning of "peace". Non-interference into other countries' internal affairs is a necessity to ensure international peace, but Obama connived with the Dalai Lama and willfully violated this norm. All issues related to Tibet are China's internal affairs. Any country or individual has no right to interfere. Furthermore, Tibet has been witnessing great economic, cultural and health service progress since its liberation under the concerted efforts of Chinese central government and the Tibetan people. The central government has, and will always respect the development and spread of religion in Tibet, attaches great importance to its human rights development, which has already made great progress compared to the situation decades ago when Tibet was ruled by the Dalai Lama under the feudal serfdom.
Second, Obama's political immaturity has also been exposed through this so-called "private meeting". Obama dreamed that he could kill two birds with one stone. To be specific, the meeting could on the one hand, convince his republican opponents of his tough foreign policy; and on the other hand, distract the world's attention from his plight in the huge debt by taking the Dalai Lama as a political counterattack towards China after his political setback in debt. At the same time, Obama immaturely thought an informal meeting could not only make his dream true, but could also gain understanding from China and other countries. Therefore, the president untied his ties and held the meeting privately in the Map Room in a low profile. However, Obama made a great mistake. His so-called "informal meeting" made no difference from the aftermath of a formal one, which has severely hurt the Sino-US relations.
Third, the Obama's meeting with the Dalai Lama could by no means help him out from the current political difficulty. On the one hand, although the meeting can distract both domestic and international attention from the debt-ceiling problem temporarily, it plays no role in addressing the problem. Obama has to face the problem soon when the world's attention turns back at the coming deadline on August 2. On the other hand, the meeting has caused irreparable damages to China-US relations no matter it was a formal one or an informal one. It would bring a long-term negative impact on bilateral relations and economic activities between the two countries and finally damages to Americans' interest. Furthermore, considering the fact that China is the largest creditor of the US, Obama's unwise meeting with the Dalai Lama would only severe the debt problem instead of easing it as he had dreamed.
