"Dalai Lama's ambition" or "Tibetans'interests"?
"No matter what the Dalai Lama or Tibetans in exile say about Tibet, it has transformed from a feudal society and closed economy into a modern and open society..." said thestar.com on May 19, 2012.
Who benefit most from the change? It is the common people in Tibet of course. Local Tibetans have seen their life expectancy increase in recent years thanks to enhanced living standards and improved medical conditions. Their average lifespan has risen from 35.5 years to the present 67 years.
In addition to local residents, riders and photographers witnessed that as well. A netizen named "xiangker " who went to Tibet said on www.xici.net:"When I came to another section of the Barkor Street, I saw another scenery, which made me forget that I was in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Instead, I felt that I was in south China. Along the street packed tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuces and other fresh vegetables, which enrich Tibetan people' s vegetable basket."
Gearóid ó Colmáin, a columnist of Metro Eireann, also wrote:" Once the Dalai Lama and his cohorts had been exiled, celebrations followed in Lhasa as the title deeds of the manorial lords were burned in bonfires. The freed Tibetan serfs received title deeds to land, cattle and tools for farming."
As for lives of the Tibetan communities in exile, they live in poverty and misery which can not be compared with their counterparts in China. Most of those Tibetans who went to India with the Dalai Lama and their descendants live in poor conditions now. The Time Magazine has reported that it is difficult for them to find jobs in India and they are regarded as parasites by the local society. Being discriminated, they feel lack sense of belonging.
One the one side, they suffer for Dalai Lama's dream of "Tibet indepence"; one the other side, their worshipper, the 14th Dalai Lama visit around the world with his extravagance.
The 14th Dalai Lama has always dubbed himself as spokesman of all the Tibetan people, but he plots independence ignoring Tibetan people's real benefits.
So what the Dalai Lama doing for? "Dalai Lama's own ambition" or "Tibetans' own interests"?
