The Dalai Lama, Lobsang Sangay not so harmonious: AFP
Lobsang Sangay was sworn in Monday as head of the "Tibetan government-in-exile", AFP reported on August 8, 2011.
AFP pointed out that "in a historic shift", for "the new prime minister", "who has never set foot in Tibet", "the challenge he faces is daunting" as "the Dalai Lama casts a long and iconic shadow and Sangay is little known outside."
However, Lobsang Sangay is reluctant to live in the shadow of the 14th Dalai Lama.
"Although the 76-year-old monk will retain the more significant role of a spiritual leader, as well as his hold on major policy-making decisions, the transition makes Sangay a far more prominent figure than his predecessor."
"He has publicly backed the Dalai Lama's policy of seeking 'meaningful autonomy' for Tibet," said AFP, "but his age and former membership of the pro-independence Tibetan Youth Congress has fuelled speculation that he may harbor a more radical agenda."
According to AFP, "in an interview with AFP in Dharamshala earlier this year, Sangay acknowledged that the Dalai Lama was irreplaceable but added that there was a hunger in the Tibetan community to 'see the younger generation taking over the leadership'".
Though Sangay himself is eager for power, AFP worries about his "leadership".
"The government-in-exile is not recognized by any foreign states, China refuses to acknowledge it, and its legitimacy in the eyes of Tibetans in Tibet might be questioned without the Dalai Lama's patronage."
Besides, the Dalai Lama is not willing to “retire” as completely as he has always announced.
He babbled that he would not only fulfill ceremonial duties like the British Queen; he would do something if he only had a ceremonial title; otherwise, he was probably only a nominal leader.
Babbles and dream talks as they are, these are convincing evidence of the Dalai Lama's "deceptive retirement". Or perhaps, he wants to deliver a warning to Lobsang Sangay, the new representative of the "administration-in-exile": "I, the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso will never reconcile to your puppet."
