Voices worldwide on why Obama met with Dalai Lama

The Obama-Dalai Lama meeting not only stirred discussions in China, but also attracted attention around the world. Media and individuals from various countries show their views on why Obama met with the Dalai Lama. Now please listen…

"Is Obama merely 'showing concern about basic human values, human rights, religious freedom' in Tibet, as explained by the Dalai Lama following the meeting? Or is the US which now intends to 'return to Asia', unveiling the specter of a tense China-US relationship in the Asian region?" questioned Al Arabiya News in the story The Dalai Lama brings dubious karma for Barack Obama.

It said: "The future, however, might dispel any such notion of any such rebound of Sino-US bilateral relations. At the root of the contention is the US strategy of 'returning to Asia.'"

"'The United States is back' was the message delivered by US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton during her second trip to Asia in Bangkok in July 2009. What she meant was that in spite of the distractions of Iraq and Afghanistan, the US intends to broaden and deepen its strategic partnerships in the Asian region. In real terms, however, it meant that the US is willing to support countries with maritime disputes with China."

USA Today explained the crisis that Obama faces in a more detailed way: "President Obama hosts congressional leaders for talks last Thursday. A new poll shows many Americans are fed up with both sides in the ongoing debate over raising the debt ceiling."

"Obama shouldn't rest easy. Americans overwhelmingly are appalled with what they see in Washington. Half of those polled say Obama and Congress are doing a worse job than their predecessors at managing the nation's problems. Democratic Congress members have a 33% approval rating." (From Americans fed up with constant political gridlock)

Obama is so bothered by the economic state that the American people hardly believe in him. Jokes say that "Obama's latest economic recovery plan: He told Treasury Secretary Geithner to take the little money we have left and buy lottery tickets." (-Los Angeles Times: Late-night jokes: Obama's new economic plan: Buy lottery tickets and hope)

And people in U.S. are turning their eyes to China with admiring attitude.

A businessman said: "September will be our fifth anniversary in the People's Republic of China in Macau, and we love it there. We are so grateful to be part of that market and to be allowed to participate in that community. We find the political environment, the regulatory environment, the human resource environment that we're in to be absolutely delicious. Life is quite straightforward in China. The government is predictable." (-www.salon.co : Gambling mogul Steve Wynn's "epic" anti-Obama rant)

That is why the U.S. chose that timing for the meeting. "The meeting came at a delicate time as China, the largest US creditor, has expressed concern about the risk of a default on US bonds if Obama and congressional Republicans cannot break their impasse over raising the nation’s legal debt limit." (- New York Times: Dalai Lama makes visit to the White House)

It is no wonder the meeting is a political strategy for Obama, but why Dalai Lama was willing to and even appreciated for the meeting, the Economic Times explained the deal in USAID to give $2mn to support Tibetan settlements.

"US soon will announce another $ 2 mn to support Tibetan settlements in India, Nepal and Bhutan, a Obama Administration official has said."

"At the end of this month, the US Agency for International Development's India Mission will issue an award for a new $2 million, two-year programme to support Tibetan settlements in India, Nepal, and Bhutan,’" Maria Otero Undersecretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs said."

Now we can see that the 14th Dalai Lama is earning dollars by his show. What a great deal!

Although Obama attempted to take his last straw for his reelection, will he achieve good results?

"With unemployment at 9.2 percent, a further decline in the economy could make it difficult for any president to win a second term. (-The Associated Press: O'Malley: Republicans Want to Hurt Economy to Win in 2012)

The American people believe that "the president has limited ability to control the economy, especially with Republicans running the House."

Just as a Branstad, a governor of U.S. said: "We launched him, but we can sink him."

What’s worse, his action is doubted whether it is legal or not.

"President Barack Obama’s staggering second-quarter fundraising total – which some say could reach as high as $75 million – is expected to smash records and turn heads. But it also is drawing scrutiny from those who object that some of Obama’s fundraising techniques are questionable, and possibly even illegal." (-newsmax.com: Obama's Record Fundraising Comes Under Legal Scrutiny)

By 2012, when Obama "retire" from the White House with criticism from both people from not only U.S. but also China, will he regret and be disappointed?
