Green development: a consensus in Tibet

Environment protection has been given more and more attention in the last few years and is a bottom line in development. Though Tibet has kept its blue skies and crystal blue waters, there is no exception to this rule.

"If ecology would be affected, no matter how great the project is, we will turn it down. In Tibet, protecting the environment is on everyone's mind," said Phuntsok, a representative of the 12th National People's Congress and commissioner of Ngari Prefecture, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

Phuntsok shared a story about local environment protection. In 2016, the local government adjusted the construction plan of a hydraulic project so as to protect 1500 red willow trees. The adjustment entailed a longer project timeline as well as higher construction cost and difficulty, but became a story on everyone's lip.

In recent years, Tibet has built ecological awareness and green development principles in its economic and social development under the banner of "Healthy environment and healthy glaciers are our best treasure." The bluest sky, whitest snow, cleanest water and purest air have become the most beautiful trademarks of Tibet.

The stunning natural sights and healthy environment give Nyingchi its unique advantage in tourism development. Last year, there was 4.37 million domestic and international visitors to the city, achieving 3.9 billion Yuan (0.57 billion US dollars) in tourism income, account for more than 30% of the city's total economic aggregate, according to Wangdu, mayor of Nyingchi and representative of the  National People's Congress.
