Horseback competition
In Tibet, horse racing has a very long history, being rich and colorful it is something very much adored by the Tibetan people. The ancestors of Tibetan people were all pastoral herders. Yet the horse was a means to associate, to produce and to conduct warfare. Life as well as the environment demanded people to have nimble horse riding skills and therefore they received training from childhood and for these reason therein horse racing competition activities were created.
All of the Tibetan folk holidays that are continued which are important pretty much all have horse racing activities. Horse racing actually is the theme in many cases of the festivals, what’s more is that Tibetan people have in fact developed horse racing culture.
Firstly, the horses will be fully decorated and other than bestowing onto the horses beautiful saddle decorations as well as bridal pieces there will also be flowers placed. Silk pieces placed around the skin of the neck and the tail will be carefully braided. However there are some places that the horse racing is conducted without anything on the back of the horse in order to increase the level of difficulty of the competition. All of the competing racers will be decorated extensively wearing magnificent and colorful clothing that may be skin tight. They wear red tassel hats or golden flower hats and a fork spear is attached to their back looking especially attractive and confident.
In Tibet the extensive herder population regards horse festivals as an extremely important matter and so get started very early with preparations. All of the headers bring tents and wear gorgeous ethnic clothing along with all kinds of exclusive jewelry and other ornamentations. They come from all different places and gather at the site of the horse competitions. For a short time, a small tent city appears at top of the plateau. Within the tent city sometimes will be heard the laughter and seen the smiles of people, while at other times you will see the headers bustling around.
