The Yushu Horse Racing Festival was hailed as a very attractive event by South Morning Post on Aug.1.

The festival began in the early 1990s and it generally lasts for 5 days. It was suspended between 2010-2014 because of the Yushu earthquake.

The highlights of this year's festival are horse racing and archery, especially horse racing which the Tibetans are really good at. The Tibetan people of the area - known as Kham - are famed for their equine skills.

Local officials say they hope to demonstrate the Tibetan culture and boosts tourism for the remote region.

Besides horse racing and archery, one Tibetan spectator said "You can appreciate Tibetan fashion shows, in which the actors are decorated with jewelry and dressed in fancy clothes as well as Tibetan dance which attracts Chinese as well as foreign tourists."

The report stated that during this year spectators, even including local people all have to purchase entrance tickets, which were free of charge in previous years.
