Tibet to establish "China-South Asia Standards Research Center"

The Tibet Autonomous Region Tibet will establish a “China-South Asia Standards Research Center” to help with implementation of the “One Belt, One Road” strategy and construction of the South Asia channel. It will help internationalize Chinese standards and promote the “going out” of technology, equipment, engineering and services, said Liu Hongchun, deputy director of Tibet Autonomous Region Quality and Technology Supervision Bureau, on the 21st.

Standards are the common language of the world and promoting standardization is beneficial to international logistics. It helps expand cooperation in knowledge, science, technology and economy and trade. Liu Hongchun said, “China-South Asia Standards Research Center” will mainly be focused on South Asian countries and will strengthen regional standardized activities, mutual recognition of standards, protection of geographical indication products and other areas of cooperation.

In recent years, the Tibet Autonomous Region has elevated the strategic position of standardization, improved the working system and level of standardized management. Liu Hongchun said that, during the “12th Five-YearPlan”period a group of local standards were introduced for Tibet’s staple crops, livestock and poultry, Tibetan incense and others. The number of standards across the whole region has reached 91 and the number of protected geographical indicator products has reached 28.

Liu Hongchun said that, at present, the Tibet Autonomous Region Quality and Supervision Bureau has already reached consensus with relevant bodies from Nepal; they exchanged views on standardized cooperation, strengthened cooperation with Nepalese institutions and will collectively promote South Asian standardized research in Tibet.

The Tibet Autonomous Region shares a border with a number of countries and regions including India and Nepal. This has been the trade route between China and South Asian countries since ancient times. The Tibet Autonomous Region “13th Five Year Plan” stipulated to promote economic and trade exchange and cultural exchange with Nepal, India and other countries, as well as strengthen technical standards.
