1st meteorite museum in Tibet opened to public
On May 20, the first meteorite museum of Tibet, the Wujuelin Meteorite Museum, was opened on the sightseeing street of the Cijuelin Tibetan Institute in Lhasa, people.cn reported.
Pieces of meteorite from different regions such as Russia and Sahara Desert as well as other meteorites that fell down to Earth thousands of years ago, are displayed in the museum.
Wu Deshi, curator of the museum, said that: “Many people have heard of meteorites, but there are just a few people who have seen them. Actually, a meteorite is a kind of rock that fell down to the surface of the earth from space during a specific period of the earth’s history. It is also a precious and rare physical sample for human beings to understand all the stars in the solar system, therein having a very high value in regards of researching and collecting.”
In the museum, tourists can see with their own eyes the celestial bodies floating in the solar system and space; they even can touch and feel these “visitors from outer space” through the displays.
There is also an astronomical observation zone on the second floor of the Wujuelin Meteorite Museum. People can see clearly the ring-shaped mountains and the meteorite craters on the surface of the Moon using the telescope. People can also observe the profound and mysterious starry sky.
The establishment of the astronomical meteorite museum has filled in gaps in Tibetan meteorite culture.
It was said that the meteorite exhibition and the astronomical observation will be free for everyone. There are 20 different pieces of different types of meteorites exhibited in the museum. Over than this, the world’s biggest unique jewelries such as the “siderite Dorje”, meteorite-sculptured Buddha statues, the “siderite ring”, earrings, and bracelets are a few of those distinguished features displayed in the museum.
