Tibet Bangga ruins are a prehistoric site dating back to the late Neolithic
A few days ago, after nearly a month of archaeological excavations, the Tibet Bangga Site and Chongye River Valley excavation projects made important gains. Experts said, at present the preliminary observation is that, the Bangga site is a prehistoric site of the late Neolithic.
The Bangga site is an important prehistoric site in Tibet’s Yarlung valley. Since the first excavation trial in 1985, archaeologists have conducted several rounds of surveys and excavations. Due to various reasons, so far data has not been officially published.
In order to fully understand the site’s age, historic social structure, production and lifestyle etc., the Tibet Institute of Heritage Conservation and Sichuan University have developed a multi-year work plan, and will work gradually to decode and interpret the culture that was once thriving at the locations.
The director of the Tibet Institute of Heritage Conservation, Habib stated that “this year archaeological work on the Bangga ruins will mainly consist of collection of small animal skeletons, plant seeds and charcoal samples through flotation methods, focusing on solving problems of time frame for various layers excavated as well as questions regarding animal breeding and crop planting”.
