The Xuegula Mountain Cycling Challenge, world's highest of its kind, kicked off recently in Yangpachen, Lhasa of Tibet Autonomous Region, Xinhua reported.
A total of 60 cycling enthusiasts from across the country took part in the race.
Phurbu, the person in charge of the race, said that the whole course is 44 kilometers, starting from the Yangbajain alpine training base at 4,300 meters and ending at the mountain pass below Xuegula at 5,010 meters. The course passes through gravel mountain roads, meadows, lakes and pastoral settlements, amongst others.
As the race takes place at high altitudes, the physical requirements for contestants, decided by the race organizing committee, are higher. Contestants are required to provide a health certificate issued by a third-level grade-A hospital; the company of an experienced physician will also be necessary.
"You feel close to the sky racing in Tibet. Also, cycling at high altitudes really brings out the best in you, as it is a real test of one’s cycling skills and physical quality. This is a truly unforgettable experience in my cycling career," said Zhangjie, a contestant from Chongqing who has taken part in many cycling races across the country.
In recent years Tibet has held many races including the Lulang Mountain Cycling Race and Basum Co Cycling Race to help provide cycling enthusiasts with an opportunity to challenge themselves and enjoy the sport.
