When is the best time to travel to Tibet? And where in Tibet?

It’s now the peak tourist season in Tibet. But due to the region’s elevation, the climate can be very poor, making it difficult for some travelers to adapt as they struggle with altitude sickness. So, what is the best time to visit Tibet, and which part?

According to a China News report, Tibet’s Climate Center has divided Tibet’s unique plateau characteristics into six distinct travel zones based on human body’s susceptibility to temperature, wind speed, humidity level, oxygen content and

Center Director Du Jun says that zone I, including Amdo county and the southern strip of Tibet, is known mostly for its grassland views. The most suitable time to visit is July.

Zone II consists mostly of Ngari’s northern parts and most of Nagqu prefecture. There are many sacred mountains, and grassland landscapes. The best time to visit is August.

Zone III includes Ngari’s southern part and a large part of the Chamdo city, as well as the southwestern Shigatse city. Known for mountain climbing, exploring and primitive forest landscapes, the best time to visit is July.

Zone IV and Zone V make up the majority of the Yarlung Zangbo River and the western part of Nyingchi prefecture. The culturs of Tibetan Buddhism and the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon area are the main tourist attractions in this area. The coziest time to visit is from May until September.

Zone VII is suitable for travel at any time of the year, especially from May until October. This area includes Nyingchi’s eastern part, most of Zayul county and Medong county. This region is best known for its forest nature reserves.
