Solar power eases electrical shortage for 600,000 Tibetans
More than 600,000 citizens of Tibet Autonomous Region get access to electricity thanks to the solar power, since China has accumulated investments of over four billion yuan to implement the solar project with a total installed gross capacity of up to 200 megawatts, Xinhua reported.
According to the Science and Technology Department of TibetAutonomous Region, with the support of the central government, Tibet has been able to greatly increase solar power development. Tibet has also initiated the "sunlight plan", "energize the no-electricity districts project in China's western area", "golden sunlight project", along with many other solar power expansion and demonstration projects, which have all achievedsocial, economic, and ecological benefits.
In the past five years, photovoltaic solar plants have been constructed in Shigatse, Yangbajain and Ngari; over 400,000 solar powered stoves have been promoted to the whole Tibet, and solar powered household appliances such as solar water heaters have also made their way into Tibetan households.
It is reported that China Mobile communication company has constructed the largest solar powered communication base station group in Tibet.Solar energy has accounted for 78.79 percent of the total energy being used in the over 1,000 base stations. Additionally, China Mobile has also constructed mobile solar power base stations in the Mt. Qomolangma area at altitudes of 5,200 meters, 5,820 meters, and 6,500 meters respectively, thus promoting network coverage of movable signal in the area, providing mountaineers and travelers with more convenience and safety.
Tibet possesses the most ample amount of solar power resources in all of China, and is also considered as a place that possesses the most abundant amount of solar power resources in the entire world as well. The average annual amount of solar power radiation has been calculated to be approximately 6,000 to 8,000 megajoules/square meter, which is about double that of places at the same latitude. Data shows that Tibet is considered to be the "sunlight center" of China, as it receives about 3,000 hours of sunlight every year.
