1. Backpack: the fewer the better

It's best to travel as light as possible in Tibet. Usually, a backpack with 45 liters or less is sufficient. If you are hiking or camping outdoors, then one small and one bigger backpack will suffice.

2. Clothing: the warmer the better

Due to the low temperatures and large fluctuations in temperature in Tibet, warm jackets and woolen clothing are essential.

If you are going trekking or mountaineering, you should wear underclothing for perspiration. When outdoors, it is inconvenient when sweat sticks to your body. It is also dangerous, as you'll lose body heat quickly. Also, you should pay special attention in July and August when it rains almost every day. During these time full-body waterproof equipment is essential.

3. Sleeping bag: the lighter the better

In July and August a 1kg down sleeping bag is sufficient to keep you warm. You must buy one with 80 percent of down or more wool. Once being compressed it's not much bigger than a big bottle of Coke.

4. Shoes: hiking shoes are preferred

It goes without saying that you need a good pair of shoes when travelling in Tibet. The best choice are hard-soled, high hiking shoes, which prevent sand going in and don’t come off easily when walking through mud. Shoes that are waterproof and warm are also a good choice. It is also recommended to bring a pair of slippers to use in the bathroom.

5. Sunglasses: not just cool ones

The strong ultraviolet rays and reflection off the snow can easily damage your eyes, so it is essential to take a good pair of sunglasses.

6. Sunscreen: a must-have to avoid skin peeling

The air on the plateaus is thin and there is direct sunlight. Sunscreen can avoid peeling from sunburn.

7. Flasks: the source of life

Tibet's water is pure and some you can drink directly from source. On the plateau there is often nothing for miles and meals are hard to come by, so it is useful to take a water flask.

8. Map & compass: amulets

In case you are lost, they can help put you back on track.

9. Canned oxygen: standard configuration

The main cause of altitude sickness is lack of oxygen. For safety, take two cans of canned oxygen.

10. Medicine: also shouldn't be forgotten

Trauma medicine, anti-inflammatory drugs, cold and headache medicine as well as medicine to suit your own health requirements.
