At the moment, widespread melting of mountain snow coupled with frequent rain has been causing landslides, mudslides, and other natural disasters to occur more regularly along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, Xinhua reported.

The department of traffic police responsible for the protection of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway has reminded self-driving tourists, cyclists, hikers, and other travellers on the road to pay close attention to weather information and to travel slowly and carefully to ensure their safety.

The Sichuan-Tibet Highway has a length of more than 2,400 kilometres, with an average altitude of over 3,000 meters.

The stunning natural landscape is enriched with local culture, appealing to self-driving tourists, hiking and cycling enthusiasts who regard the highway as a classic route into Tibet Autonomous Region.

Every year when Tibet enters the rainy season, thunder and lightning storms gradually increase.

In Ra-og Tso (Lake) of Chamdo Prefecture and Niuta Valley of Nyingchi City sections of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, mudslides, landslides, and rock falls occur frequently.

Besides, the 102 Landslide Group and the section between Tangmey and the National Highway105 maintenance squad are extremely dangerous in the Sichuan-Tibet Highway.

In Jiaobashan Section of Markham County, Chamdo, the highway has many tight bends and is framed by steep slopes on both sides, so it is prone to landslides and other disasters.

In view of the fact that the Sichuan-Tibet Highway has entered this period of high incidence of natural disasters, the highway traffic police officers and soldiers have been using steel mesh and reinforced metal pipes to reinforce the weathered mountains against landslides.

At the same time they have also set up warning signs about black ice and snow-prone sections of the roads, performed road clean-up work and conducted regular all-weather inspections.
