Travel tips:Food,Clothing,and Shopping
For those out there who are traveling to Tibet for the first time, the train generally arrives in Lhasa, capital city of Tibet Autonomous Region, at night, so we recommend that you choose to stay in a three-star hotel near the Potala Palace. We recommend: Lhasa Yellow Crane (Huanghe in Chinese) Travel Hotel, XinHua Hotel, the Economics Tower,etc...The commodities provided by these hotels are all sufficient- each room has a shower, bathroom, air conditioning, and broadband. Also, for those travelers who aren't familiar with Lhasa, for one's own safety, we recommend that you try to stay within the city center.
These two restaurants are the best places to have a meal in Lhasa. Dekyi Road is located near the Potala Palace and offers customers a wide variety of snacks, local favorites, and hot pot. The other restaurant, Sunshine Island, is famous for their fish and hot pot.
The less baggage, the better
When entering Tibet, it is best to only bring what you absolutely need, and only bring what you are able to carry yourself: the less baggage the better.Baggage with capacities of no more than 45 liters are generally enough, and if you have interest in participating in outdoor camping activities, one large bag and one small bag will be plenty. If you are simply going on trip with a travel group, we recommend that you make stops in Nyingchi Prefecture, Shigatse City, and Namtso Scenic Spot. You should be able to leave your bags in the hotels in Lhasa free of charge.
The warmer your clothes are the better
Due to the fact that there are drastic temperature differences between night and day, it is recommended that you bring along down jackets and other thermal clothing. If you decide to go mountain climbing, you should bring along no-sweat clothing, and it is recommended that you bring along waterproof clothing as well. At night, you should remember to layer on the blankets to avoid the cold.
Bring along mountain shoes
When traveling, you should always remember to bring along a good pair of shoes, especially when traveling to Tibet. The best kind of shoes one can bring along on a trip to Tibet are hard ankle-high mountain shoes, the kind that prevent sand and rocks from getting caught inside, and ones that are easy to clean mud off of. If you are able to bring a pair that is waterproof and thermal, that would be even better. You can also bring along a pair of sandals to use when showering, however the hotels will provide you with a disposable pair.
Shopping in Barkort Street
If you simply want to purchase some souvenirs and trinkets for your friends, you can go to the Barkort Street. One can usually buy things at Barkort Street for a third of the original price. However, the quality of Tibetan medicine, herbs, and saffron cannot be guaranteed, so it is better to purchase these items at an apothecary or pharmacy.
