Travel tips for visiting Tibet in May

In May, the weather in Tibet Autonomous Region is comfortable and sunny making it the ideal time to travel. We’re here to give potential tourists some pre-trip tips.

1. The peak season for travelling Tibet usually spans from May 1 all the way to Oct. 1, China’s National Holiday. Therefore, the peak season is just beginning to start as we enter May.

2. In May, during the peak season, the travel agencies’ offers usually increase from 200 to 500 yuan per person. However from March to April there is hardly any increase in prices.

3. Remember to bring two pairs of spring clothes, and a light-weight jacket as the average temperature during the day is 22 degrees Celsius, but can drop to 3 degrees Celsius at night. Due to the drastic climate change, travelers should remember to cover up in blankets at night to avoid catching a cold.

4. In spring, plants have already started flourishing. There is greenery as far as the eye can see, and the fountain in the Potala Palace Square has already been turned on creating a beautiful nighttime snapshot.

5. For those regular travelers, it is recommended that you keep your stay to a maximum of eight days and seven nights. However, for those whose health is in relatively good condition, you can stay for an extended period of time and explore Mt. Qomalangma and other scenic destinations.

6. Please refrain from entering Tibet if you are sick or have any sort of illness, as your symptoms may become more serious upon your arrival in Lhasa.

7. During the peak season, you can take the train into Tibet to allow your body to gradually adjust to the high altitude, and you can bring some raisins and crackers along with to snack on. However, we recommend that you refrain from bringing spicy food.

8. Every year in May, there are always illegal agencies who try to scam travelers, it is recommended that you stay cautious and be weary of suspicious agencies who claim they belong to some top travel agencies in China.
