The government of the Tibet Autonomous Region has been making big strides in poverty reduction in recent years, according to a recent report released by the region's poverty alleviation office.

Around 130,000 people in the region were lifted out of poverty last year, according to the report.

Those living in poverty decreased to 320,000 last year from 830,000 in 2010.

The region is expected to lift 80,000 people out of poverty this year, and more than 1.8 billion yuan ($287 million) will be invested to support the cause, said Hu Xinsheng, head of the Tibet Poverty Alleviation Office.

The proportion of poverty-stricken people in the region's rural areas has been reduced to 13 percent from 34 percent in 2010.

An effective management mechanism, rapid investment growth and better implementation of poverty reduction measures are key factors of the achievement, according to the report.

The report shows that poverty alleviation funds for Tibet granted by the central and local governments reached 1.76 billion yuan last year, up 13.9 percent year-on-year.

"Governments and poverty alleviation offices at various levels strove to help poverty-stricken residents through all kinds of bank loans," Hu said.

"We expanded the scope of the loans and tried to make it easier for farmers and nomads to get them," Hu said.

According to Ma Tashi, director of the poverty alleviation office in Lhasa's Chengguan district, impoverished rural residents benefited from projects such as cattle farms, holiday villages and rental housing.

"I think the rapid growth of poverty alleviation in the region is mainly due to the increasing growth of the investments," Ma said.

Since 2010, the central government has invested more than 4.7 billion yuan in poverty relief in Tibet.

"We will work to keep the portion of low-income residents below 12 percent," Hu said.
