Tibetan delegation holds talks with faculty at Toronto University

A delegation of Tibetologists composed of Benpa Lhamo from the Tibetan Academy of Social Science, Purbu Tsering, an eminent monk of Sera Monastery in Lhasa, and Padma Norbu, a professor at the Tibet Medicine School, held a symposium with Toronto University faculty members, on Nov. 7, 2014.

The meeting was part of the 2014 China Tibetan Culture Week in Canada. Delegates briefed their audience on the development of Tibet, the history of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan medicine, and exchanged views with the Toronto University faculty.

Delegates agreed that the symposium was aimed at promoting understanding and academic exchanges between the University of Toronto and universities in Tibet, and it helped foreign people to understand the current situation in Tibet.

After the meeting, the faculty expressed their joy to meet with the Tibetan delegation and hoped for more academic exchanges between the two sides, since there are lots of Chinese students studying in Toronto University however only one student from the Toronto University able to study in the Tibet University.

The delegates visited the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library of the university and were shown the copied and written versions of classics of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan medicine.

The culture week is co-sponsored by China's State Council Information Office, the People's Government of Tibet Autonomous Region, and the Chinese Embassy in Canada. It has become a popular event for showcasing to the world the real Tibet under the administration of the Chinese government. The culture week has toured over 11 countries since 2001, including Australia, Canada and Spain.
