The Qinghai-Tibet Railway, world's highest plateau railway, received a record number of 128,000 passengers during the three-day Mid-autumn holiday, People.cn reported.
Authority said the number of passengers hit a peak of 34,000 on Sept. 6 alone.
It is also the first holiday for the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway, Tibet's second railway line which carried a total of 10,800 passengers during this period.
One railway staff said that besides holiday effect, two other reasons could explain the huge increase: on the one hand, the holiday coincided with the peak of returning students; one the other hand, the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway attracted more people to travel by train.
