Water, incense & medicine, Tibet's future economic engines

Tibet will strive to develop natural drinking water industry and its featured competitive industries such as Khada, Tibetan incense and Tibetan medicine, Chinanews.com reported.

Tibet is hailed as "water tower of Asia", which is the region of the most abundant water resources in China. The average annual total water resource is 448.2 billion cubic meters, accounting for 15.9 percent of China's total amount.

Jiang Jie, vice chairman of Tibet Autonomous Region, said that although the mineral water of "5100" and "Everest Glacier" has been well known in China, both their scale and economic outcome are still far from expectation.

Besides natural drinking water, Jiang said,traditional culture-featured handicrafts such as Tibetan incense, Khada, and Tibetan medicine are Tibetan unique products with competitive advantages compared with China's inland industry.

According to Xu Fei, director of Tibet autnomous reginal Industry and Information Technology Department, Tibet's light industry growth is estimated to increase by 20 percent in the first half year than the same period of last year, among which some specialty industries rises largely with the food manufacturing industry quadrupled.

Moreover, the construction of key projects and industry parks develops fast.

Up to now, Tibet has accomplished the investment of more than 21 billion yuan (3.4 Billion US dollars)on key industry and information technology projects prescribed in the "12th Five Year Plan". The construction of Tibet-Qinghai Industrial Park has started at full capacity with an investment of 1.29 billion yuan (206 million US dollars) on infrastructure construction fulfilled. And 20 enterprises are under construction within the year with a total investment of 17.35 billion yuan (almost 28 billion US dollars).
