Tibet to charge for entering Medog Scenic Spot

Tourists will be charged for 160 yuan per person for entering the Medog Scenic Spot in the southern part of Tibet as of June 10, the Economic Daily reported.

The Medog Highway, linking Medog County in the Tibet to the rest of the country, was officially opened to traffic on Oct. 31 last year, ending the county's history of no highway and brining an increasing number of tourists to the once isolated mountain-circled country.

In the first quarter of 2014, some 10,000 tourists visited the Medog County, up by 181 percent year-on-year.

"We've invested heavier in the tourism industry since the opening of the highway because the county is potential in receiving tourist." Tashi, head of the county, pointed out by charging the admission fee, the number of tourist will be kept under control so as to protect the ecological environment.

He added the admission fee will be pumped into improve the county's basic infrastructure and protect the environment.

"We will make Medog a high-end tourist destination in the future," said Tashi.
