Tibet has established a three-dimensional transportation network. With the construction of highways, railways and airports, the transport conditions within and outside the region become better and better.

In 2006, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway's opening to traffic broke the traffic "bottle-neck" on the plateau, ending Tibet's history of no railways.

As the terminal of the 1,142 kilometer Qinghai-Tibet Railway at present, Lhasa Railway Station locates in Newu Township, Tohlung Dechen County of southwest Lhasa at an altitude of over 3,600 meters. It was put into operation on July 1, 2006, along with the Qinghai-Tibet Railway's opening to traffic.

Designed as a two-story leaning architecture, the 22.9 meters high main station building towers on the hillside with an area of 23,600 square meters. In 2008, the main building of Lhasa Railway Station was awarded "China Building Construction Luban Awards", Chinese highest award in building construction field.
