Poverty alleviation contributes to ethnic unity
Yeshe Drolkar, a Tibetan female deputy was encouraged by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s resolution to fight against poverty announced in his first annual government work report on March 5.
"I was cheerful about the bright prospect that more policy, subsidy and technical supports will flow to Tibet, "she said.
In 2003, Yeshe Drolkar started to raise chicken in her hometown Nedong County, Lhoka Prefecture. Before that she earned a living by selling clothes and cigarette lighters in inland China.
In 2013, Yeshe Drolkar expanded her business with government supports and sold out 1.2 mln chickens. Now she is one of the regular chicken suppliers of KFC and Mc Donalds chain stores in Lhasa.
As the woman leader in Tibet’s poultry industry, Yeshe Drolkar has helped over 10 thousand people out of poverty by introducing them to raise chicken.
Poverty alleviation plays an important role in promoting stability in ethnic areas. The government work report said that in 2014, China expects to help 10 mln rural people out of poverty. And it’s the common wish of all people to live a stable and guaranteed life.
Tibet had the highest poverty rate in China in 2010, with 34.42 percent of its rural and pastoral population living below the country's poverty line.
The central and regional governments have allocated 3.9 billion yuan in poverty alleviation funds to the plateau region, with this figure covering aid in education, financing and technology for Tibetans, according to Xinhua in Oct. 2013.
At the end of 2013, the number of Tibetans living below the country’s poverty line was reduced to 0.45 mln compared with 58 mln the same period of 2012.
