Tibet finishes renovation of murals at ruins of Guge Kingdom

The renovation project for the ancient murals at the ruins of Guge Kingdom in Ngari Prefecture of Tibet has been completed, Xinhua reported.

As a cultural site under state protection, the ruins of the Guge Kingdom are located on the outskirts of Zhada County in Ngari Prefecture, which are of high artistic and cultural value.

Known as the "Old Summer Palace of Tibet", the Guge Kingdom was the region's center of culture and economy from the 10th to the 16th century.

"The murals here first emerged in the 15th century, but had once fell off or stained due to natural erosion for hundreds of years," said Li Xingguo, director of the local cultural relics bureau in Ngari.

As a key part in the renovation project for the ruins of Guge Kingdom, the restoration project of its murals started in May 2012, covering an area of over 1,270 square meters including five main halls and a cave in the ruins.

By observing the principle of keeping its original appearance, experts have done scientific research and analysis and chosen natural and harmless materials during the renovation of ancient murals.

In addition, the entire project of the ruins of Guge Kingdom is expected to be finished in August 2014.
