Tibetan consumers spend nearly 50 mln yuan on 'Singles Day'

The Tibetan consumers spent nearly 47.1 mln yuan (7.85 mln USD)on Nov.11, known as "Double Eleven Shopping Festival" in China, according to Taobao.com, a bustling B2C platform in China.

Compared with this year, only 24.8 mln yuan (4.1 mln USD) was spend on online shopping on the 'Singles Day' last year in Tibet, according to Alibaba Group, operator of China's biggest e-commerce platform.

Shopping malls and stores also geared up, rolling out discounted products and kicking off sales promotions in hopes of boosting the traditional window shopping and yielded good sales, according to Tu Yaquan, planning director of Lhasa Department Store.

The Tibetan people’s consuming capability is rising and styles are diversifying in recent years. The per capita disposable income of urban dwellers in Tibet was 18,028 yuan, according to the White Paper titled Development and Progress of Tibet released in late October, 2013.

The Nov. 11 online shopping spree in the name of "Singles Day", a celebration for single people, has become China's most popular annual commercial event and created an e-commerce miracle.
