History today: Panchen Lama's enthronement
On Dec 8, 1995, the enthronement ceremony of the 11th Panchen Erdini Qoigyijabu (Bainqen Lama)was grandly held in his seat the Tashilhungpo Monastery in Tibet's Shigatse.
The ceremony was presided and overseen by representative of the State Council, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and State Councilor Li Tieying, the then chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region Gyaltsen Norbu and the assigned commissioner and head of the religious administration of the State Council Ye Xiaowen.
In line with religious customs, Gyaltsen Norbu, special commissioner of the State Council and chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Government, declared aloud the opening of the enthronement ceremony after the lamas chanted sutras three times.
On behalf of the State Council, Li Tieying granted the gold seal of authority and golden certificate of appointment to the 11th Panchen Erdeni. Then he read out the full text of the golden certificate.
At the enthronement ceremony, Li Tieying also conferred the inscription of Chinese President Jiang Zemin to the 11th Panchen Lama.
