Nearly 2,000 free surgery have been conducted for Tibetan children with congenital heart disease (CHD) during 2013, according to Chinatibetnews.com.

These children were selected from the 2,597 newly confirmed children patients this year, while the rest would also be sent to inland China for free treatments successively in the coming year.

Apart from the free treatment, each children patient from rural areas, pasturing areas and poverty stricken families also gets a subsidy of 1,600 yuan or 8,000 yuan (264 or 1318 US dollars), the former of which is for those being cured within Tibet Autonomous Region and the latter is for those who should go to inland China for treatments.

Due to the high altitude and severe climate of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, local children are much easier to suffer congenital heart disease than those in other areas of China. A series of charity projects aiming to help them for free screening and treatments have been conducted, such as the public charity projects entitled "Chinese heart" and "For our children" launched by the China Charity Federation.

According to the common process, universal screening project would be conducted among children and teenagers in Tibet. Those children with congenital heart disease will be sent to the two designated hospitals- People’s Hospital of Tibet Autonomous Region and General Hospital Tibet Military District- for free treatments after preliminary examination and definite diagnosis, while those in more serious conditions will be sent to other famous hospitals of inland Chinese cities for free treatments.

The curing expenses of all the treatments would be shared by the provinces, cities and state-owned enterprises (SOE) with Aid-Tibet task, as well as other enterprises and charity organizations.
