In 2013, Tibet has confirmed 2,460 children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and has finished 1,695 surgeries for them, with another over 700 free surgeries to be conducted in the rest two months, reported by chinatibetnews.com.

Moreover, Tibet will construct a dynamic congenital heart disease screening and treatment system for the newly born infant patients apart from those who have been counted, in order to achieve the aim of eliminating congenital heart disease, according to the official taking charge of CHD treatment and cure office of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

As usual, another charity medical team of the "For our children" project from inland China have arrived in Lhasa, capital city of Tibet, in mid October and have divided into two groups leaving for western Tibet's Ngari Prefecture to conduct screening project of congenital heart disease.

Up to now the two groups of medical staff from well-known inland Chinese hospitals have conducted the screening for 174 children in Ngari's Gar County, using ultrasonography inspection only on 29 of the children, and confirming two with congenital heart disease.

In Gegye County the medical group also have screened 174 children and confirmed five with CHD.

According to source from the China Charity Federation, the organizer of the charity screening project, the screening project aims at a comprehensive and clear understanding of basic information of children patients with congenital heart disease, so that they can treat and cure them as soon as their illness is discovered.

After the preliminary examination and the definite diagnosis, these children will be sent to the two designated hospitals in Tibet for free treatment, and those in more serious conditions will be sent to other cities of inland China for free treatment.

Recently, there have been over 100 children confirmed with CHD from Lhasa, Shigatse and Nagqu Prefecture leaving for Beijing, Shanghai and Jilin provinces for free treatment. The latest batch of them arrived in Changchun, capital city of northeastern China's Jilin Province, on Oct. 17, 2013. And also there’s another batch of children having finished their treatments and returning home from Beijing on Oct. 28, 2013.

According to the statistics, Tibet has confirmed 2,460 children with congenital heart disease and planed to cure all of them this year, among which 1,695 surgeries have been finished and another over 700 free surgeries will be conducted successively in the following two months.

Due to the high altitude and severe climate of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, local children are much easier to suffer congenital heart disease than those in other areas of China. A series of charity projects aiming to help them for free treatments have been conducted, such as the public charity projects entitled "Chinese heart" and "For our children" launched by the China Charity Federation.
