Beijing East Road, Beijing West Road, Beijing Experiment High School, Haidian Primary School… Although Lhasa is 3,000 km away from Beijing, Beijing impressions can be seen everywhere here.
In 1994, the Third Tibet Work Conference confirmed the “supporting by district” principal, Beijing was in charge of supporting Lhasa.
Damxung County which is known as “Lhasa Grand North Gate” is over 170 kilometers from Lhasa with the average elevation of about 4,500 meters.
Because of the high altitude and low atmospheric pressure, apart from the fact that people have to suffer oxygen-poor conditions, even water can only be boiled up to 80℃ while rice can never be fully cooked.
In 2013, Wang Min, who was from the Shunyi District’s Bureau of Water Resources, came to Damxung amongst the 7th aiding-Tibet staff to take charge as the deputy secretary of the county party committee.
As soon as he took office, Wang Min started to visit every single household in the county. He learned that every year when the winter came, Damxung’s cold and oxygen-poor situation became very serious. Many calves and lambs raised by the herdsmen died from the coldness or diseases. Besides, because of little rainfall all year round, local residents rarely ate fresh vegetables, during the winter time they just could have carrots and potatoes. But Wang Min realized that a few farmer households had built dual-purpose greenhouses, therein they could grow and raise vegetables and lamps which can be used all year round, living a very good life.
“A dual-purpose greenhouse is not only able to improve the diet structure of the people here, but also can help to realize people and livestock living separately. It is very helpful. ” Wang Min made a resolution to popularize the dual-purpose greenhouse. During his two-year time working on aiding Tibet, Wang Min was contacting the county’s Armed Police Squadron, building up more than 300 dual-purpose greenhouses for the local people.
The greenhouses help livestock stay warm and healthy in the winter time while making it possible to grow vegetables during the spring, summer and fall time. The expense for building the dual-purpose greenhouses is subsidized by the government while individuals just have to pay about 10 percent of the expense.
“We Northern Tibet herdsmen can also eat fresh vegetables grown by ourselves during the winter time.” The herdsman Baguo said while looking at the glossy and green vegetables.
In 2015, the first group team of Tibet medical support came to take charge in the People’s Hospital of Lhasa City. This team is composed of 15 experts from Beijing who come from 14 hospitals in Beijing such as Beijing Children's Hospital, Beijing Maternity Hospital, Friendship Hospital Foreigner's Emergency Service, and so on.
Gong Xiaojun, a pediatric doctor from Beijing Shijitan Hospital joined the aiding-Tibet team in August of 2015. “As a doctor, you must go to the place in which the patients need you the most.”, said Gong Xiaojun.
Coming to Lhasa, Gong Xiaojun realized that rickets and its complications are very common amongst the children here. “These are all caused by malnutrition”. Gradually, Gong Xiaojun took a habit of emphasizing over and over those important medical advices. “Children under two years old must take A, D vitamins and calcium.”, Gong Xiaojun has to repeat everyday over 100 times this sentence.
Since 2013, Beijing has sent 53 aiding-Tibet doctors curing over 150 children having congenital heart disease, cleft lips, dislocation of joint and cataracts. Beijing doctors have been also organized in teams to go to farming and pastoral areas as well as monasteries, giving almost 100 rounds of volunteer medical consultation. Besides, the doctors, through the methods of one-to-one and one-to-many, give the local health-care technicians training courses.
Bright and large classrooms, modernized synthetic surface track and campus full of blossoming flowers… this is the Lhasa Beijing Experiment High School. 2014 was the 20th anniversary of Beijing aiding Lhasa on which the Lhasa Experiment High School was officially opened under the investment of Beijing that numbers to over 200 million yuan (32.2 million US dollars).
Li Peng is a teacher of mathematics from Beijing. In August of last year, he came to the Lhasa Beijing Experiment High School, teaching mathematics at two classes of the first grade. The mathematical foundation of the students here is relatively poor. Although they are already high-school students, they do not have solid knowledge that is supposed to be mastered from the primary school. With the test paper totaled 150 points, the average mathematics score of these two classes is just over 40.
How to create the students’ confidence and interest in studying mathematics is what Li Peng thinks about every day. Sometimes, he will on purpose suspend a question in the class and keep the answer until the next class. As soon as the class is finished, Li Peng is surrounded by the students: “Professor, please tell us the answer!”
“Enthusiasm can be gained only when questions are asked”, said Li Peng. Less than one year, the average mathematics score of the students from his two classes has been increased by another 20.
So far, there have been 99 teachers from Beijing divided into two groups who came to the Lhasa Beijing High School. Last year, the ratio of students who passed the national college exam reached 80.43 percent, therein surpassing that of most of the key high schools within Tibet and creating the highest ratio in all the history of Lhasa general high schools.
The aiding-Tibet education team has brought to Tibet the advanced teaching concepts, curriculums as well as practical experiences which can help the students enjoy the highly qualified education without going out of Tibet.
